Hurricane Harvey swept into Houston last week affecting every person I know. I was in Boston on vacation at the time, but we were glued to the news most of the time anxiously waiting to see how it would play out and hoping our home would be safe as well as our son, our dog, neighbors and friends. There was one emotion being stirred up by the news and that was FEAR. Fear and anxiety only fuel the energy of whatever it is people are fearful of, and I found it interesting to watch the storm build from a Category 1 to 4 very quickly. Coincidence? I also had to work through some guilt about being on vacation in a beautiful city with perfect weather while watching my hometown get pounded. This somewhat tempered my experience here.
We have been unable to get home due to airport closures and flooded roads. The soonest we can leave is Saturday night, so we essentially have an extended week to spend here. Today is Wednesday, August 31st. My husband, being in the gas and power industry has been working most of the time, which has given us a sense of normalcy. I feel so much gratitude that we are here tucked into a hotel with access to everything we need. It has been so nice to connect to long lost friends and family checking in on us, not realizing we are traveling, to know that we are in someone’s thoughts far away.
Although there are devastating effects from every storm, it creates opportunity for people to step out of their normal mindset and begin to immediately think of others. Houston is banding together as those of us who have been spared and not displaced have asked ourselves what can we do to help? Every single person I know is shifting attention to the collective and there is a power in that. Our city is banding together. Friends are collecting cleaning supplies, shoes, volunteering time. There is nothing that cannot be achieved when millions of people are sending prayers, resources and contributing time to the cleanup efforts. I know it will take years for our city to recover, however, this incredible effort by first responders, our city leaders and the many volunteers who will ride this out for as long as it takes is going to create healing and full recovery. It has completely restored my faith in humanity.
Your contribution can be as simple as creating the intention to hold space for those suffering in Houston, to send prayers, to connect with others in your community to do the same, as there is tremendous power in that positive energy. My husband and I have been wondering what we can do being so far away. As an energy and lightworker I am sending light and love to all the people being affected, including the people running the recovery effort and all the first responders and volunteers. I am also sending love to mother earth and the waters and all her creatures as they are suffering as well. Many pets have had to be abandoned in their homes and yards, which breaks my heart. We will open our home to any out of town volunteers. I am offering free coaching sessions to anyone going through extreme suffering, contact me at wendy@alinealifecoaching.com.
I have heard that only light can drive out darkness and I am seeing the light in people doing just that. We can only be in the moment, doing whatever it is we are inspired to do to help our fellow man. In the hardest times, we must focus on the positive things happening around us and not be drawn in by the fear based news stories trying to generate more viewers and revenue for their stations. Let’s connect and create healing for Houston with the highest integrity and collective efforts. With this many people standing together, I have no doubt we can come out the other side of this as better individuals and a stronger community. I am sending love and aloha to all those I can’t physically reach today in my hometown of Houston, but also to all of you reading my blog, for you too are a part of the collective and we are all connected as one. Please take a moment to send love energy and an intention of healing to all those affected by this storm. It’s not only Houston, but outlying areas and Lake Charles, Louisiana feeling the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Your positive energy will make a difference, you are more powerful than you think!
