In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, there continues to be a ripple of disruption. Some major arteries are still under water creating intense traffic in our city of Houston and many are displaced. Homes are completely destroyed and people are now focused on moving forward and picking up the pieces. There are still people taking refuge in coordinated city shelters trying to figure out the next step and those of us who escaped with little or no property loss are wondering how we can continue to show up for those displaced and/or impacted by the storm. You can drive down streets and see sidewalks piled high with furniture and household possessions destroyed by the flood. It is hard to reconcile neighborhoods full of beautiful homes with sidewalks littered with possessions just discarded and unsalvageable piled high. It is also sad to think about those who were living on the margin to begin with, what is next for them?
My perspective is different from that of most people who are taking the storm and its impacts at face value. As an energy practitioner, I look at everything from an energetic standpoint. Prior to the storm, Houston was a city where everyone was caught up in the hustle. Money was being made, people were in a hurry to get somewhere, and it was all about winning the game. For example, you delay ½ a second at a stop light you will get honked at. Thinking about yourself, how to get ahead, how to look good, how to win at the game of life is lower vibrational energy. It’s saying I am better or worse than you and that creates separation. There is no unity consciousness, it is very much a mindset that creates the feeling of being not good enough. I am surrounded by Tesla cars, beautiful sports cars, people moving and shaking, people who look like they are winning the game. So many people define success by the number of shiny objects you possess, your bank balance and your zip code. Somewhere in this mindset, we’ve become disconnected as a society. From an energy standpoint, the competition mindset creates a lower vibrational energy and density. It is based on fear of not being good enough and a sense of running a race and always looking over your shoulder.
Something shifted after the hurricane and flooding. Almost everyone I know stepped up to help someone else. The focus shifted to other people (regardless of race, income of class) rather than yourself. The question shifted from how can I win to how can I help? The energy of the city, the vibration here started rising as people began helping each other. Friends helped people clear out flooded homes, baked banana bread for first responders, conducted AA meetings at the convention center. People went through their own homes to donate things to those who had lost everything. People were donating time and money. I felt the energy of the city begin to transform. A collective higher vibe has been permeating the recovery efforts. People are showing up for people and the need to be “better” has taken a backseat to the focus on being “kinder”. This is what community feels like.
This storm literally washed away that lower vibrational energy ushering in the higher vibrational energy of unity consciousness. This hurricane created a cleansing of sorts of this negative vibe. We are seeing it happen all over the globe with wildfires, earthquakes and other hurricanes sweeping through highly populated cities. It is nice to see people looking to help others, to see a shift in the focus from the self to the collective. A few other ways to raise the vibration includes turning off the news. The goal of the news is to generate ratings and the quickest way to generate ratings is through fear and drama. We don’t need to see image after image of tragedy. If something major is happening, you will know about it. Raise your vibration by working on being a better person each day. I knew I was making progress when someone laid on the horn because I delayed a ½ second to go on a green light and I didn’t flip them off! Baby steps! Out of tragedy we can always find the light in the people who are showing up for their fellow man. The collective response here has given me renewed faith in humanity.
